Updating Education

Quote- "Most schools have abandoned teaching handwriting, but a few have held their ground, to the good fortune of their students."- Naomi S. Baron

Response- I believe that students should still be learning hand writing, but teachers should not put so much emphasis on this subject. Many schools are requiring students to type papers, because it is easier for them to read, but handwriting is still used. Therefore it should still be part of the curriculum. It is important that educators and students take advantage of technology, but we should not rely on computers for everything. Technology is not flawless, so we cannot give up skills that we may need, such as hand writing. There would also be an issue with creating boundaries between generations. Even though technology is continuing to advance and has become an important part of our society; there are still many people that do not have a computer or internet access. Technology is prevalent in the present time, but we should not give up on skills that we have depended on for thousands of years.

Related Resources- In this blog an educator describes her experience with technology in education. She mentions that she used to be against technology, but now believes that technology can be used in effective ways. She also mentions some pros and cons of using technology.

  1. I agree Sarah, I think as long as we are still teaching English whether its through typing or technology then we are good. I don't see how people abbreviating words or cutting words short would be taking over technology.

  2. I agree that we need too let students know that grammer and spelling are important. They can't loose focus on whats important just because there is more technology correcting them. They need to know spelling, grammer, and writing skills because you never know when the technology is going to break.

  3. I agree Sarah. Handwriting is very important! Technology can't take over our life completely. Some students parents don't have the money for things such as computers or internet. Then that would pinpoint that student out, and maybe put them down a little. Handwriting and grammar are very important to todays society even if computers are becoming a very big part of it.

  4. Great discussion! I think it's important that people learn to pay attention to the context, audience and purpose for their writing and learn to write in all kinds of ways!

  5. Sarah,
I feel the same. I have the attitude if it isn’t broke don’t fix it, and that sort of applies to handwriting. Like you said technology still has its flaws. What happens when the computer crashes and there is an important paper due for a meeting that these kids will have to attend when they grow up. I feel that they need to have handwriting skills even if it’s not for everyday use.
